Ketchikan High School Jazz Ensemble vinyl records in cardboard sleeve. A. Record with sides 1 and 4 B. Record with sides 2 and 3 C. Sleeve On the inside sleeve is a description of the performances: "In June of 1978, the Kayhi Jazz Ensemble appeared on stage in Monterey Peninsula College Theatre, performing as 'Guest Band' in the California High School Jazz Festival Competition. The object of the festival is to select the top jazz ensemble in the state from among those outstanding bands who have won festivals elsewhere earlier in the ear. Of the thirty-some bands who qualify to audition each year, ten or eleven bands are chosen for this final competition, with the winning group repeating their performance in the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival in the Fall. Professional Musicians from Southern California served as judges on Saturday and performed a jazz concert on Friday Evening. Their 45-minute set was followed by the Kayhi Jazz Ensemble performance, during which alto saxophonist Gary Foster was featured with the band. On Saturday, the Kayhi musicians played another 40-minute program after the final competing group, while the adjudicators reached their decisions. The Ketchikan appearance in the festival was the first time an outside group had appeared in the eleven year history of the festival and ours was the only group to perform twice during the event. You will hear in these recordings a sample of what we did during these two action-packed days, including audience reaction to our performances. What may show through also is some of the enthusiasm and excitement generated by the opportunity to hear the other fine musicians perform, to share our music with such an appreciative and knowledgeable audience, to experience Monterey, Yosemite and San Francisco, and to share all of the associated joys of our trip together." The cover art features an abstract art design in yellow, orange, and red. Text on the front of the cardboard sleeve reads, "LIVE FROM MONTEREY...AND THEN SOME!/ KETCHIKAN HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ ENSEMBLE/ ROY McPHERSON, Director." On the inside of the sleeve is a photograph of the band, lists of band members from 1977 to 1979 and track listings from 1978 to 1979. Side 1: Track 1.
