Commemorative Envelope: 50th Anniversary of the First Commercial Flight Air mail envelope commemorating the 50th anniversary of the arrival in Alaska of the first commercial aircraft flown by pioneer aviator Roy F. Jones. Standard airmail envelope with and 11¢ airmail stamp post marked July 17, 1972, p.m., Ketchikan Alaska. There is a pale blue graphic of Alaska with the NORTHBIRD on top. Under the north bird is the following text: Roy Jones Gerald Smith Pilot Mechanic 50th ANNIVERSARY Ketchikan Arrival in Alaska of the first aircraft To be used for commercial flying. July 17, 1922, Ketchikan, Alaska Photo of Roy Jones pasted to the lower bottom of the envelope labeled Roy Jones. Roy Jones signature is just below the airplane The envelope is addressed to Mrs. Donald McGillvray Director Tongass H.S. Museum Ketchikan, Alaska 99901 Inside is a blue card that reads: North bird Aviation Company AERIAL SERVICE A GERNERAL SERVICD FOR FROM Cannerymen, Miners Portland Canal Engineers, Prospectors to Trappers and Sportsmen Cape Spencer Aerial Photography and reconnaissance BOOKING OFFICE AND HANGAR Ketchikan, Alaska ROY F. JONES was the first Alaska-based flier among those a few years later called Alaska bush Pilots. He Flew a Curtiss MF bi-plane with open cockpit, equipped with a Hispano Suiza 180 HP engine. He made his first Alaska landing at Ketchikan on July 17th, 1922. He and mechanic Gerald Smith were carried from the dock in Newtown on the shoulders of enthusiastic citizens to Pioneer Hall where they were officially re- ceived and inducted into the Pioneers of Alaska.
