Description |
Filling line at the Pacific Pearl of Alaska crab cannery, 1951 Ketchikan Daily News, 3/26/1954 "Pacific Pearl To Pack At Hydaburg Ivar Wendt, who has been packing crab at the Pacific Pearl cannery in Ketchikan, has leased the shell fish packing plant and cold storage at Hydaburg, according to word received here today. The Hydaburg cannery, built some years ago by the Hydaburg Native Co-operative, has ccold storage and shrimp and crab packing and processing facilities. Little packing has been done at the cannery in the past because native interest in shell fish was slight. Wendt, prominent Seattle fish broker, and his company, known as Pacific Pearl, have been packing crab in Ketchikan from supplies brought in from international waters in Hecate strait. It is assumed that Pacific Pearl will can Hecate strait crab at Hydaburg and will also attempt to develop known shrimp resources. It is not known whether operations at the cannery here will be discontinued." |
Provenance |
Donated to the Museum by the Photographer Note: a community member brought in duplicate image of 2003.2.63.890 (same series from the crab cannery) for a museum digital slide show (that never happened due to lack of response). She worked at the cannery for only one summer and indicated it was in the summer of 1953, in June or July. During that summer the workers worked for 11 cents a pound and were frequently monitored to make sure they work getting all the meat out of the shell. The crab was cracked immediately after they were cooked. She said if the crab were cold, the meat would not come out of the shell very well. 03/28/2007 ERB |
