Tom Sawyer's Flowers and Gift Shop located at 651 Mission, 1954 Tom Sawyers is listed in the 1955 telephone directory as located at 327 Front Street Ketchikan Daily News article, 5/15/1954 "New Floral Shop Opens Today A new floral shop opened in Ketchikan today under the name of Tom Sawyer's Flower shop. The business, located at 651 Mission street, is co-owned by Tom Sawyer and Jim Carney, both of whom are experienced in the florist trade. Sawyer minored in horticulture at Washington State college and owned and operated Moscow florists in Moscow, Idaho, for three years. Prior to that, he was employed by three floral shops in Seattle-Charles E. Sullivan's, Hollywood Gardens and Harry Crouch's flowers. He also was employed in Pullman, Washington at Neill's Flower shop. Before coming to Ketchikan, Sawyer took further study in horticulture at the University of Idaho after service in World War II. Both he and Carney are veterans. Sawyer will do the floral designing and landscaping for the shop. On opening day, a flower was given each women visiting the shop which is across the street from the post office." |
