Portrait Arthur Moa wearing his World War I Army uniform in an embossed folder Notes from Bertha Hunt Wells: "Soldier from here that Mr. and Mrs. F.J. Hunt chose to adopt to send gifts to during World War I and he always kept in touch with them and later with me since he and his wife spend summers in the Portland canal district at Hyder and their winters in Seattle." Daily Progressive Miner, October 18, 1918 Arthur Moa Writes to God-Parents Arthur Moa, adopted god-son of Mr. and Mrs. Forest J Hunt, writes them under date of October 6, at Camp Dodge, as follows: Dear God-parents: Well I have completed the second phase my journey to France. I expect that the next time we move that it will be over-seas. There is a chance tho that some of us may be sent to other parts of the country first, as the 14th is going to be split up and many of the men transferred to other units. We left Alaska on the evening of Sept. 21st on the transport Sherman. It took us six days to get to San Francisco. Many of the men were sea seasick as we had a rather heavy swell for a few days. I did not get sick but I came awfully close to it. Tho we had fine weather, I can not say that I enjoyed the trip on the transport. We were too crowded and we were fed like a bunch of cattle. The food was the poorest that I have ever seen. Many of the boys could not eat it at all. But if we did live poorly on the transport, we sure made up for it when we got out to the Presidio. You aught to have seen some of the feeds we had. Our mess-sergeant is a wonder and when he has half a chance he sees to it that our company has the best of food and plenty of it. We rested at the Presidio three days before starting east so I got a chance to see a little of Frisco. I liked what little I saw of California very well and wish that we could have stayed there for our training. We had a lovely trip from San Francisco to Camp Dodge. We traveled as tourists so had dandy accommodations, and I enjoyed the trip immensely. Were delayed for six hours by a wreck at Great Salt Lake. It took us just four days and four nights to get here. None of us Alaskans like it here as it is so hot amid dusty, but I guess we will have to get used to that. There are many cases of Spanish Influenza in camp and several deaths have occurred from it. The camp is under quarantine now. Will write to you when I get a little better acquainted with conditions here, in the the meantime would be glad o get some news from Alaska. Hoping that this will find all of you well I close with best wishes to all of you Your adopted Soldier Arthur Co. "C' 14th infantry U. S. A.. Camp Dodge, Iowa. |
