Ketchikan Cold Storage employees on the roof, October 4, 1954 Jack Mendenhall, manager of Ketchikan Cold Storage, awards service pins to employees Ed Jones, Ed Miller, Al Wright, Everett Wooster, Elmer Nolte, Barney Wilson, and Jim Pinkerton. Located on Water Street between Front Street and the narrows, Ketchikan Cold Storage dominated the downtown waterfront from 1913 until the buildings were demolished in 1968. Ketchikan Daily News photo caption, 10/5/1954 (photo 2003.2.63.1003) "Service Pins Awarded to Cold Storage Employees Service pins were awarded to eight Ketchikan Cold Storage employees yesterday afternoon. Making the presentation (above) is Jack Mendenhall (left) to Ed Jones and Ed Miller for 25 years; Al Wright and Everett Wooster, for years; Elmer Nolte, Barney Nilsen and Jim Pinkerton, five years. Mendenhall, the manager, also received a 25-year pin." Ketchikan Daily News article, 10/5/1954 "Cold Storage Awards Service Pins Eight employees with a combined total of 139 years service with the Ketchikan Cold Storage company and its predecessors received service pins yesterday. Ed Jones, chief engineer, earned his 25-year pin with several years to spare. He took a temporary job with the Cold Storage 35 years ago and remained to make it a permanent job. Jack Mendenhall, manager, also earned his gold 25-year pin with time left over. He has 33 years service with the Cold Storage and its predecessors. Ed Miller, ice puller, also received a gold 25-year pin. Miller has been with the plant for 28 years. Al Wright, dockman, received a silver pin denoting 10 years of service. He is a fairly recent employee, having started in 1942. Everett Wooster, assistant engineer, earned his silver 10-year pin with a few months to spare, having been with the company since early in 1944. Elmer Nolte, assistant engineer, received a bronze 5-year pin for having been with the plant since 1945. Barney Nilsen, dockman, also received a bronze five-year pin. He has held his job with the cold storage plant since early 1948. Jim Pinkerton, assistant manager, received the bronze five-year pin. He also has been with the plant since 1948." |
