The event was held in Kasaan on Prince of Wales Island on September 3, 2016. The canoe, shown in profile, is black with white on the bow and formline design. Eleven people are in the canoe, but not all are visible. SaanuGa (Gianna Willard) is at the front wearing a Ravenstail headband. |
Provenance |
Donated by Tlingit & Haida, formerly known as the Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. On September 3, 2016 approximately 1,000 visitors gathered in Kasaan on Prince of Wales Island for the rededication of Náay í'Waans (The Great House), better known as the Whale House. Canoes came from Kasaan, Klawock, Ketchikan, and even as far away as Juneau for the event. As each canoe arrived, the standing Chief Son-i-Hat (John McAllister) granted them permission to land upon the shore. The event also included traditional songs and food. |
