Firemen battled the blaze for nearly two hours." Ketchikan Daily News article, 9/24/1953 "Presbyterian Church Damaged By Fire Structural damage amounting to between $2500 and $3000 resulted from a fire at the First Presbyterian church this morning. The fire, which started at about 10 a.m., is thought to have originated in a small wardrobe closet in the back of the church. Firemen were at the scene for almost two hours. The new organ which was recently installed at the church was reported to have been burned, but Pastor John Grissett and Stanley Adams, fire chief, reported the instrument was unharmed. The fire department was called out a second time about 12:30 this afternoon to 122A Inman street, where a dish of grease on the stove had caught fire. No damage was reported." |
