Girls practicing dance, 1913 Names on back of image: Helen Paup Louise Hanson Loullea Wakefield Gertrude Henderickson (Hendrickson) Charlotte Schock (Shock) Florence Reynolds Irene Chesney Ross Michener Esther Ford Ketchikan Daily News 1967 Image caption: "WHEN THE YOUNG LADIES in this photograph danced for the photographer, Alaska had been a U.S. possession for only 47 years. The picture was taken in 1914 in the Redmen's Building that stood where City Center Service now stands. The graceful young lady fourth from the right on the photograph is Irene McGillvray, who donned her old middy blouse and bloomers again Saturday as she readied them for the Centennial Panorama March 18. The Panorama, sponsored by the Ketchikan Historical Society in conjunction with the Centennial Committee, will be one of the highlights of the Centennial year. The styles, songs, skits, and dances of the years of Alaska's history will be paraded in a show for the entire family. The Pioneer Ragtime Band will be featured. A barbershop quartet is being lined up. And "bathing beauties from the past" will parade across the high school stage." |
