Fourth of July Oration, 1904 Charles Cosgrove and the Metlakatla Indian Band surrounded by a 4th of July crowd on the corner of Dock and Front Streets. Old exhibit label: Fourth of July Oration, 1904 Oratory skills were highly prized in the days before radio, and attorney Charles Cosgrove apparently possessed them. Here he is, whipping up the crowd on the Fourth of July. The Metlakatla Indian Band is also participating in the ceremonies." Note: the candy / confectionary store beyond the crowd on the left side (totem pole out front) is Newt Casperson's confectionary store (note the bottles of root beer in front of the store. Previously this location housed the Palace Cafe before the Palace moved to Dock Street in Oct 1903. This same Front Street building continued to house a confectionary type store for the next 20 plus years. The topic centered on freedom, the Declaration of Independence, and events leading up to its signing. Eloquence was highly appreciated and greeted with enthusiastic applause.
