Aerial view of the West End, circa 1957 Note the completed Wingren Court and Austin Towers apartment buildings. Also note the helicopter in front of the Toot and Tell Drive-in in the left foreground. It had been flown to Ketchikan by its owner, Joel Soloy. The aircraft was towed across Tongass Avenue to the Eichners' bus barn (Northern Bus Company,) where some mechanical work was done. The Eicheners (Ken and his son, Dan) were so impressed with the helicopter that they joined with other investors to buy one. That was the beginning of Temsco Helicopters. |
