Newtown and Tongass Narrows, 1903 View of taken from north bank of Newtown and Tongass Narrows. Old cabin in left foreground. Chemical damage to right side. Note: Hunt Bulding is up, but no Ketchikan Power Company yet Bertha Wells Note "In foreground log house occupied by Williams and Blackwell, mining men. Ship moored at dock. View is south from approximately 1400 block Tongass Avenue. Includes description of Maggie Brown Williams early days in Ketchikan." |

Wells Log house was occupied by Williams & Blackwell mining men - In 1901 - My girl friend in Tacoma wrote me that Maggie Brown - a friend had married a mining man named Williams a couple years before - against her parents wishes, as they knew nothing about him - "Now Maggie has a baby boy & her husband has sent for her to join him in Ketchikan - She doesn't know anyone here & first time away from her folks. Bert so please call on her." - When I heard of her arrival I went down to call and I was surely welcome. The folks tho't she was just a bride and chivareed?) her and scared her nearly to death - She tho't Indians were on the war path" Exhibit note: ("Chivaree" - Shivaree is a noisy celebration; a mock serenade with kettles, horns, etc. to a couple on their wedding night. Once a common practice, the shivaree now is seldom seen ... or heard.) |
