Ketchikan Daily News article, 1/7/1953 "Modernized Pig-Wiggly Store Opens A Modernized Piggy Wiggly store, which Manager John Mancell calls "the most modern in Alaska," was opened this morning following a one-week closure for renovations. The streamlined store boasts of an automatic checking stand, operated on an electric-eye principle, which Mancell says is the first in Alaska and one of the few on the Pacific coast. Freshly painted in light coral and ripple green, the brilliantly lighted store presents an altogether new look compared with the former one. Shelving has been completely re-arranged and new stock 'islands' have been installed leading to the automatic check stand. Flooring is of rubber tile. The former entrance in the center of the front has been replaced with full display windows and a new entrance made at the left. Carpentry work was done by McGillvray Bros. And the Smith Electric company handled electrical changes. Other work was done by Mancell himself, assisted by Harry F. Newell, John Stanczak, Aileen Tucker and Mickey Acton, Empolyes." |
