Note the City Hall and Fire House, APA fish trap, but no warehouse in Thomas Basin area, no Thomas Street, no St. John school, and no Main School on main school hill. Visible signs / businesses: Mining Journal, Customs House / Pioneer Hall, Redmen's Hall, Fire Hall, Flag Pole, Verney Brothers mill at North Saxman (aka Port Dundas). Mining Journal, 12/19/1903 "The Verney Broothers Lumber Company, owners of the location known as North Saxman have determined to change the’ name to that of Port Dundas. The name of the company will remain the same, however, but from and after January 1st next its P. O. address will be Ketchikan, that being the nearest post office." The Verney Bros. Lumber Company Edmond and Francis Verney built a steam-powered sawmill at North Saxman in 1900, and cut lumber the following year for the Fidalgo Island Company cannery. The mill’s cut in 1900 was 400 MBF, and the following year 700 MBF. A shingle mill was added in 1903. The company had a lumber yard at Ketchikan, and among the products advertised in 1904 were western redcedar shingles, kiln-dried finished lumber, beaded ceiling material, flooring, turned work, molding, and pickets. Financial difficulties led to the liquidation of the company’s assets at a marshal’s sale in 1907. Duplicate images are: 84.1.68.35 & 62.4.3.60 |
