Barber and Eichner Chevron Service Station, January 7, 1955 Located on the corner of Jefferson and Tongass, this Chevron service station was owned and operated by Dewey Barber and Ken Eichner. Among the employees were Bob Crowder, George Arnold, Cal Hoffman, George Kammerzelle, Danny Eichner, Harold Lervik and Leonard Kemp. According to Standard Oil Company officials, the station featured "...all the latest in improvement and design provided by Standard in its widespread experience, and will offer Ketchikan motorists facilities and service comparable to the finest obtainable in either Alaska or in the states." The Wingren Court apartment building is visible in the background. Ketchikan Daily News photo caption, 1/8/1955 (photo 2003.2.63.1337) "Opening its doors to the public yesterday, the new Chevron service station (above). Tongass and Jefferson, became the first new business to begin operation this year. The station is owned and operated by Dewey Barber and Ken Eichner with Bob Crowder, George Arnold, Cal Hoffman, George Kammerzelle, Danny Eichner, Harold Lervik and Leonard Kemp on the staff. The Background is the Wingren Apartments." Ketchikan Daily News article, 9/15/1954 "New Service Station Being Built Construction work in connection with Ketchikan's newest super service station - Barber and Eichner's Chevron gas station -located at Tongass and Jefferson streets, is now well underway, according to Pete DeBoer, Standard Oil Company of California manager here. "The new unit will incorporate all the latest in improvement and design provided by Standard in its widespread experience, and will offer Ketchikan motorists facilities and service comparable to the finest obtainable in either Alaska or the states," he said. "The new station will incorporate the most modern and efficient lubrication and automotive servicing equipment and will feature Standard's new detergent action gasoline and RPM motor oil. Both Dewey and Kenny are well known in Ketchikan as operators of Northern Bus company and it is anticipated that construction will be completed and the station opened for business late this year." |
