Seiner brailing herring from a seine net, circa 1929 Text from album: "LITTLE FISHES After these HERRING are caught, they will be BAIT. The herring fishermen operating this herring outfit, consisting of two seine boats, catch an average of over two million pounds of herring per year during the winter season which are frozen or used fresh for bait by the halibut and salmon fishermen operating out of Ketchikan, Alaska. The schools of herring are caught and potted by means of large seines and then are brailed out as shown in this picture, to be frozen or used as needed. During the herring season, the New England Fish Co. branch at Ketchikan freezes approximately 75,000# per day." |
