Description |
Ketchikan Waterfront view of Mail Boat Taku II at her berth Mailboats at their moorings, 1914 Until 1901, mail service from Ketchikan to outlying settle-ments and mining camps was provided on an irregular and informal basis by vessels planning to stop at those loca-tions. Then the U.S. Post Office began issuing mail con-tracts to private operators, thus guaranteeing more or less regular mail delivery - and freight and passenger service, as well - to remote areas. Mailboats were the principal pro-viders of that service until they were supplanted by aircraft in the 1930s. The 55-foot mailboat Taku II (dark hull) was built in Seattle in 1910. She ran at close to ten knots with her 40-horse-power Standard gas engine. To the left of the Taku II is the El Paso, a slender, 65-foot mailboat modeled for speed. To the far right is the little Rough Rider, still new when this photo was taken. Several of the Front Street homes lining the hillside still exist today. |
