Description |
Color digital photograph of a canoe journey to Celebration in June 2022 taken by Raeanne Holmes. The photograph appears to have been taken from inside the canoe at the bow. Nine people are in the canoe, but not all are visible. Elizabeth Medicine Crow is in the rear on the viewer's left side wearing a black jacket with rolled up sleeves. SaanuGa (Gianna Willard) is on Elizabeth's right wearing a black short sleeve shirt. The exact location where the photograph was taken is not known. |
Provenance |
Donated by Tlingit & Haida, formerly known as the Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Celebration began in 1982 as a biennial gathering of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures. For four days every other June, clans from Southeast Alaska and beyond converge in Juneau, Alaska. Festivities include traditional song and dance, display of regalia, arts and crafts, food, and Native languages. According to Sealaska Heritage Institute, who sponsor the event, "Prior to European contact, the peoples of the Northwest Coast held many traditional ceremonies in which singing, dancing, formal oratory, and feasting took place. As the economy of the region changed to one based on cash rather than trade and sharing, some Native traditions floundered. Dance, song, traditional oratory, and knowledge of clan protocol were in danger of being lost to history. Realizing this, Native elders created Celebration as a way to bring Native people together to showcase and preserve their traditions and customs." |
