Description |
A.C.S. Lecturer, April 1955 Alaska Communication System Offices at 217 Front Street Sgt. First Class Kenneth L.Christiansen, U.S. Army Signal Corps, review the history, organization and mission of the Alaska Communication System for a group of Kayhi students. ACS was established by the Army in 1900 to provide telegraph (and later, radio) communications in Alaska. The system was used by civilians, as well as the miliatary. During the 1950s, the office was located in the Ryus Block, on the water side of Front Street, between Mission and Dock Streets. In 1971 the government sold ACS to private interests, and it became RCA Alascom. Ketchikan Daily News photo caption, 4/5/1955 (see 2003.2.63.839) "Sfc. Kenneth L. Christiansen, in charge of the ACS receiving and delivery section here, is shown indoctrinating a group of Ketchikan high school students in the history, organization and mission of the ACS, active in Alaska since 1900. Students expressed deep interest in the system's history and methods of operation as presented by Sfc. Chris Hansen, who is a veteran of 12 years of service with the ACS. People Identified: Denny Brown is standing on the far left in a dark leather coat. Don Wright is the young man standing one woman away from Denny, in the front of the group of people and holding something in front with both hands. On the far right side standing next to Sargent First Class Kenneth Christiansen is the teacher Mildred Gelston." |
