Brick from Philadelphia's Liberty Hall award, 1943 White pedestal base with silver plaque, and image of Independence Hall in blue, brick red, black and white. A plaque on the front of the trophy reads, "To the Schools of the TERRITORY OF ALASKA the U.S. Treasury LIBERTY BRICK AWARD for outstanding work on the Schools At War Program presented by a patriotic committee of Philadelphians and enshrined for young Americans by the Ladies Home Journal……January 1943." Original Brick from Independence Hall Allen Saalburg Ketchikan Alaska Chronicle, December 3, 1943 AWARD WON BY KETCHIKAN SCHOOLS FOR THEIR SCHOOLS AT WAR PROGRAM Dr. Ryan Due To Present Famous Brick Education Commissioner To Appear Tuesday At School Assembly Dr. James C. Ryan, territorial commissioner of education, who will be in Ketchikan next Tuesday to visit in the school system, will present the Liberty brick from Independence ball in Philadelphia to the Ketchikan schools for winning the Alaska-wide schools-at-war contest during the last school year. Superintendent Harold A. Hoeglund received word from Dr. Ryan today that he is coming. He will be accompanied by Henrietta Power, deputy administrator of the schools-at-war program, who also is expected to speak at the assembly planned cor 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the high school auditorium. Miss Ohr, representative of the public health service, also will come with Dr. Ryan to check on the local tuberculosis clinic and other phases of the school health program. The Liberty brick, of great historical value, will be kept permanently by the local school system. It was won for attaining first place In a contest involving war bond sales, contributions to the Red Cross and other patriotic campaigns, and salvage work. The report drawn by Ethel Evans, showing publicity received and charting progress of the work, also figured in the judges decision. Ketchikan Alaska Chronicle, Wednesday December 8, 1943 Pearl Harbor Day Observed By Students Liberty Brick and Minute Man Flag Presented by Ryan; Bond Sales High Three Pearl Harbor day assemblies were held in Ketchikan public schools yesterday, at; all of which presentation ceremonies were held to show the honor won by the system in last years schools-at-war program. Commissioner James C. Ryan of the Alaskan department of education and Henrietta Power, deputy administrator of the schools-at-war program, presented a Liberty brick taken from the walls of Independence hall in Philadelphia to the local schools. The brick, posted by the U. S. treasury department as the, first prize in Alaska for bond and salvage work last school year, was the gift of a patriotic committee of Philadelphia. It is mounted in a glass case before a picture of the hail where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed and where the constitution was drafted. The, brick, will be kept in a shoe case at the main school as a permanent possession of the local system Thirteen scrapbooks showing the work of Alaska schools at war were brought there, by Mrs. Power and will be displayed in a downtown window for some time. Dr. Ryan spoke at the assembly for main school grades 1 to 6 at 11:10 a.m., at the White Cliff school at 1:30 and to the junior high and high school at 2:30. He stressed that speed in bond and stamp buying will save many American lives, "so that on the next Armistice day there will be fewer parents who may say their sons were killed the day before the war ended." The Liberty brick is presented, Mrs. Powe said, to all the schools of Alaska. Both she and Dr. Ryan said the battle is not yet won and that this is not a time to rest on past accomplishments. " A Minute Man flag was presented to, each of the schools by the visitors. Pearl Harbor day was a big day at White cliff where, the $2300 goal for buying a glider was over-subscribed. Four men from the coast guard base showed approximately 100 weapons anti implements of war such as machine guns, gas masks, first aid equipment and shells. They explained the cost to buyers of bonds and taxpayers. WAR PRELUDE GIVEN Elsie Stouffers history class took part in the main school assembly, reading documents affecting America's entry into the war, including the Presidents message to congress that asked for a declaration of war. The White Cliff program, attended by several parents, included presentation by Principal Frank Peterson of prizes for wining bond posters, to program by Esther Byrnes, Jack Fredrickson, first, and kindergarten, report on the war Margaret Crosby; a song by the "Lets Remember Pearl Harbor" by third grade girls, saxophone solo by Edward Creed with Irehe Bue at the piano, report on the years plans by Lydia Reister, Song by third grade, a solo on bottles filled with water by Clarice Brennon, community singing including America with Jerrine Burdett and James Vanderwell directing. The fourth grade presented the display of weapons. The guardsmen, who gave up a half day Pearl "Harbor holiday to show their implements of war, were Ted Hoffman, chief specialist, chemical warfare Ordnance; Frank Collins, 1st third class, chemical "warfare ordnance; Frank Collins, gunners mate second class; and Nick, Andrisi, gunners mate second class. |
