Description |
Drum, "Salmon Run" by Ken Decker, 2019. The 20" drum has a Northwest Coast style design on the deer hide in red, blue, and black using both screenprint and hand-painted techniques. The design consists of a raven holding a round "sun" in its beak with four salmon in its belly and four salmon above it. The hide is stretched over the hoop, which is made of 24 pieces of red and yellow cedar glued together like barrel slats. Ken Decker signed the drum on the inside of the hoop, "Salmon Run - / By Ken Decker,/ Tsimshian Nation/ "2019." Three braids of sinew keep the hide stretched over the hoop. Accompanying drumstick is 2019.2.1.2. |
Provenance |
Ken Decker owns Crazy Wolf Studio at 633 Mission Street with his wife Monica Decker. From Crazy Wolf Studio's website, "Ken Decker is a Master drum maker. These are the same type of drums Southeast Alaska Natives use at their ceremonies today and in the past. Ken uses Sitka blacktail deer skins and Alaska yellow cedar for his drums. His traditional designs reflect his Tsimshian ancestry. All of his drums are hand painted by him. He also teaches others how to make drums to keep his culture alive." Ken has been an instructor in the Native Arts Studies Program and is a long-time member of the Totem Heritage Center Advisory Committee. |
