Description |
Nickel plated bracelet engraved with the rank/name/date: LCDR Richard Stratton 1-5-67. Stratton was a US Navy POW in Vietnam and released in 1973. Bracelets like this were popular during the early to mid 1970's to show support for Prisoners of War and Missing in Action soldiers of the Vietnam War. Bracelets were advertised as to be worn "till he comes home." Interestingly during an internet search, many people still wear the original bracelets and there are a variety of companies producing new bracelets for all POW/MIA military personnel. Note: original producers of the bracelets disbanded in 1976. Background info: The bracelets were engraved with the rank / name / missing - captured date of POW/MIA soldiers of the Vietnam War. The bracelet campaign was an outgrowth of the Los Angeles based organization, Voices in Vital America (VIVA). The program launched in 1970 and by the time VIVA closed its doors in 1976, the organization had made and sold 5 million bracelets. Funds raised from the sale of the bracelets (in addition to the bracelets itself) were used to draw attention to prisoners and the missing in Vietnam. The bracelets were reported to cost .75 to create and were sold at a cost of 2.50. |
