Description |
Twined spruce root basket & lid with grass false embroidery woven by Selina Peratrovich Basket and lid, two strand twining, straight sides. Basket base is woven using both plaiting and twining techniques. Three strand twine on turning edge from base to side. One row of plaiting at the top, one row under the rim. Design: main design band on the basket is an arrow like geometric design done with grass false embroidery. Most similar to the "Feather Wings of the Arrow" design or the "Back Bone" design. ------>>------>>------>>------ The straight line is dyed green spruce root weavers and the arrows are grass false embroidery (10 arrows total). Above and below the arrow design are three rows of strawberry weave with a dark blue / black dyed weaver. The lid design is a smaller repeat of the basket design and the knob also has strawberry weave. Note: there has been significant fading on the exterior of the basket. Still visible on the interior are dyed spruce root weavers, which were once visible on the exterior of the basket. Note: The sides of the basket were woven with the warp pointed down. This makes a clockwise weaving pattern when the basket is upright. The base of the basket was woven counterclockwise right until the base changed to the side. Here the weaver stops and switches the direction of the weaving on the side. There is a gap of 8cm between the changes in direction. Note: there are several similar features on baskets 2006.2.30.13 - 2006.2.30.16. These include the weaving style of the base and the design features. It is possible the baskets were woven by the same weaver. 02/05/2007 ERB |
Provenance |
Note: during a reseach visit in 2024, Delores Churchill noted the main pattern is Shooting Arrow. If [the points] are closer together, it would be the Backbone pattern. 03/06/2024 ERB Note: during a 2/2017 visit to the Museum, Delores Churchill identified this basket as one her mother made "while her eyes were still good". 02/13/2017 ERB Ruth Kubley Hewitt worked at her father's store. Her father was Henry Kubley; the store was later run by Ruth's brother Lawrence Kubley. Ruth collected these items as examples of store inventory. At the time of the donation, Blossom indicated her mother would trade / buy native made goods locally in Ketchikan, Metlakatla, Saxman, Hydaburg, and Kasaan. Frequently she would trade for goods. Blossom said her mother's crocheted blankets were very popular with the Native artists she was trading with. |
