Model Airplane: de Havilland DHC2 "Beaver" in Taquan Air Service, Inc., colors 1:24 scale model of a de Havilland DHC2 "Beaver" N1O18A on floats. Modified kit-built, hand-painted and detailed. Painted in color scheme of Taquan Air Service, Inc. Wingspan, 24 inches; overall length, 17 inches; overall height, 7 inches. Taquan Air Service started in 1977 by Jerry Scudero with one plane. The air service went bankrupt in 2000 at which time the company was the largest air service in the Ketchikan Area with over 200 employees and operating with 12 to 18 airplanes and had nearly 12,000 dfight departures in the first three quarters of 1999. The civilian version DHC2 Beaver was was manufactured by de Havilland Aircraft of Canada, Ltd. from 1948 to 1969. The less common turboprop was built between 1964 to 1969. Many floatplane versions can still be seen in use today. The military version of this aircraft type is the U-6A (known as the L-20A until 1962). Between 1952 and 1960 nearly 1,000 were delivered to the U.S. armed services. Most were used by the U.S. Army, but more than 200 U-6As went into the USAF inventory and were flown in utility transport and liaison roles. The de Havilland DHC2 Mk1 Beaver was one of the most successful bushplanes ever made, 1,692 Beaver were built over a 20 year period from 1948 to 1968. In 1987 the Beaver was chosen as one of Canada's ten most important engineering achievements of the last century. CF-OBS was the first production Beaver manufactured by deHavilland Canada. It was purchased by the Ontario Provincial Air Service in 1948 and was the first of a total of 44 aircraft purchased by them over the years. With a 450 hp PW Wasp Jr. under it's hood, it's range is 450 miles with a cruising speed of 130 mph with a ceiling of 18,000 ft. The beaver is 30' 4" long and 9' high, with a wingspan of 48'. Though the DHC2 has not been in production for more than thirty years, it remains one of the most reliable -and successful - bushplanes ever made. In 1987 the Beaver was chosen as one of Canada's ten most important engineering achievements of the last century. It is the most commonly seen floatplane in Ketchikan.
