Description |
Ravenstail sample made by Stacey Williams in 2019. Sample is made of merino wool warp and merino yarn weft. Sample made to show Ravenstail weaving in progress, including unfinished two-strand or "Z" twist twining and incomplete sea otter fur trim across the top. Design is "Box of Daylight" with a treasure inside. This is an origin story among the Northwest Coast Peoples, where Raven is credited with bringing the first light to the world. This story is so important it is told across multiple mediums from carving to weaving. Note: The design represents the story of Nathan Jackson's carved wall plaque, "Raven Stealing the Sun" (87.2.11.1), which is adjacent to the display of the Ravenstail sample at the Totem Heritage Center.
