Description |
Women's utilitarian work basket made of red cedar by Stacey Williams in 2019. Artist statement, "Tlingit styled basket, done by starting with a stack of six (6) warps and dividing out by twining. The base uses a technique called 'spiral like a sea snail' while adding warps to increase the base size while leaving space between rows. The warps are left sticking out on the bottom side of the basket, to stop the basket weave from getting damaged while working on the beach or in the forest. The turning edge is done with a single row of '3-way twine' and then switches back to basic '2-way twine.' This was done for four (4) rows, and then another '3-way twine' was inserted. This was done to frame the spaced twining, on both top and bottom. The top band is done as a 'skip-stitch' accomplished by weaving over 2 warps and under 2 warps on an odd number of warps. The ending is done in 2 rows; during the last row of the skip stitch, all the warps are folded behind to the inside of the basket in a loop. After the loops are completed, and additional row of 3-way twine is done. Then, a strand of red cedar is run through all of the loops. All the loops are then pulled tight. The basket was not trimmed until fully dried." |
