Description |
Tlingit robe danced by Mathew Dewitt, circa 1948 The robe has a design taken from the Thunderbird House from Juneau on the front (see the photo from the state museum web site), and one on back of a brown bear. Front design consists of two "black birds" with Hooligan, or Oolichan and an upside down face. The birds and face elements are made from black, white, and green felt, with sequins and beads. The Ooligans are made from white felt, as are the teeth. There are black felt bands around the sleeves and bottom of the tunic. Also there are dangling accents sewn on around the neck and sleeve openings. These accents are made variously from shell, beads and turquoise stones, and glass beads. The backside has a bear design on the back made from brown and white felt. This design is highly accented with white buttons of various designs. |

This tunic was donated by Mathew Dewitt. in 2006. Mathew Dewitt Tlingit names are GuXnaawoo meaning Big Dead Brown Bear and Shaga meaning Leader of the Wolf Pack This Tlingit robe was danced by Mathew Dewitt, and made by the Dewitt family in the late 1940's. The robe has a design taken from the Thunderbird House in Juneau on the front, and one on back of a brown bear. |
